History

of some Vintage Days

The Vintage Diving Days began on the Costa Brava at the initiative of Mr. Enrique Dauner and Mr. Ramón Roqueta, following the example of pioneering countries in the defense of the Historical Heritage of Diving.

The "1st Vintage Diving Day" was held in March 2009 in Tossa de Mar. The Tossa de Mar City Council, Cressi, and the Cartagena-based Navy Diving Center (CBA) collaborated, and it was a complete success.

The “II Vintage Diving Day” took place in May 2011 again in Tossa de Mar.

The "3rd Vintage Diving Conference" took place on May 12-13, 2012, in Tossa de Mar, also organized by Enrique Dauner and Ramón Roqueta. The "1st International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei" took place simultaneously, organized by Andrés Clarós. Both meetings were highly successful with attendees from Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, England, Venezuela, and the United States. The results were captured in a report for the TV series "Thalassa." It was the first time that lectures on diving equipment and underwater cameras were included in the vintage diving format. The Historical Diving Societies of Spain, France, Germany, and the United States also participated.

The “IV Historical Diving Conference” was held in May 2013, also in Tossa de Mar, led by Ramón Roqueta and Enrique Dauner.

The “II International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei” took place at the Barcelona Maritime Museum (MMB) in October 2014 during the exhibition held by the Barcelona Underwater Camera Museum (BUCAM) and the MMB from 24 October 2014 to 12 April 2015.

The 5th Vintage Diving Day took place in October 2021, also in Tossa de Mar, this time organized by the HDSES, recovering the event at the initiative and with the collaboration of Raúl Álvarez, manager of the Krakendive diving center, and also Juan Torras, Antique Dive Helmets, with a Shallow Waters Miller Dunn helmet, Enrique Dauner and Andrés Clarós, all of them members of HDSES.

This post-pandemic year we are recovering the project of the "III International Underwater Cameras Meeting: UW Rollei" organized by BUCAM and the "VI Vintage Diving Conference" organized by HDS-ES. This new edition will take place in Lloret de Mar (Girona) on September 16-17-18, 2022. The change of location to Lloret de Mar is due to the excellent reception by the Mayor's Office of Lloret de Mar as well as the fact that it was precisely in its waters, in Montgoda, where Dr. Ernest Adler built his watertight photography and film boxes that allowed him to shoot the first amateur film images on the Costa Brava (ca 1945) and which deserved the award at the IX Barcelona Amateur Film Festival March 1947. That is why this year we created the Dr. Ernest Adler Vintage Underwater Photography Award.

BUCAM is the Barcelona Underwater Camera Museum, an organization founded by Andrés Clarós (andresclaros@hotmail.com) in 2007 to house the world's largest collection of underwater cameras and to share its history and knowledge of underwater imaging systems. The ultimate goal of BUCAM is to open a physical museum.

Given its international presence, the Spanish Association for the History of Diving (HDSES) (Historical Diving Society Spain) was founded in 2006 by a group of diving enthusiasts from the earliest and later generations. It is worth highlighting the perseverance of Juan Torras, a founding member, who has been the driving force behind this association from the very beginning. Subsequently, we have been joined by divers from all over Spain. These divers are either major collectors of underwater equipment or simply lovers of diving and its history. HDSES has always been present at almost all Vintage events focused on diving and its techniques, has published out-of-print diving books, has participated in exhibitions and Diving Shows, and is now organizing, for the second time, this new edition of the 2022 Vintage Diving Days.
